Leading plant nutrition company Yara is partnering Grassland & Muck 2008 demonstrating industry commitment and delivering technical strength with real innovation and leadership in grassland nutrition and management.

Yara's Marketing Manager Rosie Carne said "Yara is delighted to be the event partner with the RASE for the UK's premier grassland event, which is held every three years. The development of grassland fertilizers and recommendations has been an important part of our R&D Programme for many years, with the importance of the nutritional value of muck always taken in to account."

 Committed to the Industry

Picture MontageGetting the most from grass is a vital part of any livestock enterprise, whether it is an intensive dairy unit or a more extensive beef or sheep enterprise. Yara has over 50 years experience of growing grass, during which time many trials have been conducted to establish the correct use of fertilizer. Following a series of trials over a number of years Yara introduced 'The Grassland Rule' of 2 units N / acre / day, on which grass recommendations are based in order to optimise grass yield and quality.

Fertilizer applications can also be an effective way of getting trace elements into deficient herbage and therefore stock, as our trials work with selenium has shown. Leading to the introduction of products such as Top Stock, an NPK containing Sodium and Selenium and Grasstrac, containing a number of important nutrients for animal health.

With global demand outstripping supply, fertilizer prices are higher for this coming season. Tight supplies will mean that farmers need to make the most of every kg of fertilizer they apply and also maximise the nutrient value of muck and slurry. When nitrogen applications are targeted carefully, even at prices of around £195/tonne (34.5% N), an estimated return of £3.50 for every £1 spent on nitrogen fertilizer can be expected for silage.

With the anticipated acceptance of the revised NVZ Action Programme measures, more focus will be placed on accurate nutrient management in the coming years. With Yara's range of recommendations and fertilizers formulated to meet all soil types and conditions as well as the extensive technical knowledge within the company Yara stands in a strong position to help its customers to become the best in their field.
