Grassland & Muck 2008
Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire
Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd May

06/05/2008 Grassland and Muck 2008 – don’t miss it!

A visit to this year’s Grassland and Muck event promises to be a unique opportunity for farmers wanting to improve returns from their grassland and muck.

The event, which is being held on 21 and 22 May 2008 at Stoneleigh Park, is sponsored by Yara UK Ltd and will challenge producers to plan grass and muck as essential assets for profitable meat and milk production. It will also focus on the practicalities of managing and handling slurry and FYM in the light of the revamped NVZ rulings currently going through consultation.

“Any forage-based system is very dependent on getting the detail and the science right,” says Alice Bell, the RASE’ Technical Events Manager. “Simple changes like reducing reseeding intervals, nutrient testing of slurry and ensuring the optimal timing of FYM application can make a real difference to an enterprise’ bottom-line by simply making better use of the muck and grass on the farm.”

“We will use the Grassland & Muck Event to bring alive the science, legislative requirements and physical handling of these increasingly important assets,” she points out.

The rapid rise in feed and fertiliser prices makes the tri-annual Grassland & Muck Event well timed. The event will focus on re-evaluating the value of muck and grass to improve enterprise profitability within an increasingly stringent legislative environment.

The 77ha (190 acre) site at Stoneleigh Park will be home to over 40 manufacturers demonstrating muck and grassland machinery on 65ha (160 acres) of standing grass and with 650 tonnes of muck. Demonstrating machines include grass mowers and conditioners, forage-harvesters, balers, wrappers, mixer wagons, clamp filling equipment and slurry injection systems.

New for the event in 2008 will be an increased focus on muck, slurry and the revamped NVZ rulings in the Manure and Nutrient Management Centre which will be adjacent to the practical muck handling demos.

There will also be free Forums running on both days of the event which, combined with practical demonstrations, will tackle feeding the dry beef and dairy cow at grass, the new NVZ rulings, accurately assessing grass dry matter in-field and ensuring sustained grass quality through effective management.

There will also be a dedicated area of the site drilled with grass plots demonstrating the latest herbage varieties, the effects of different nutrient regimes and the benefits of herbicides.
