Grass drilling

Click for seed mixture details

The grass seed mixture drilled across the Grassland and Muck event site was:

Kilos per acre
3.50 Fox Italian ryegrass
3.50 Limeta Italian ryegrass
3.50 Solid Hybrid ryegrass (Tet.)
3.50 Citeliac Hybrid ryegrass (Tet)
______
14.00

The aim of the mix is to provide very high yields of high quality forage with a view to meeting the needs of a dedicated cutting regime or the more usual two cuts and then grazing practised on farm.

The soil type at Stoneleigh is lighter in nature and prone to drying out, so the inclusion of perennial type hybrids will add density to the sward. This increased leaf ground cover facilitates greater shade to conserve moisture to help prevent this.

Both Solid and Citeliac exhibit the perennial ryegrass characters of excellent disease resistance, high forage quality (D value) for hybrid types and leafy regrowth after defoliation. This is coupled with their Italian ryegrass attributes of good spring growth and yield potential.

The optimum first cut date for this mix is around May 13 for the midlands of England.
